An Open Letter to College Graduates from Mark Wilhelm, CEO

Dear College Graduate,

You have earned a college degree – congratulations! The hard work and determination you employed to reach this milestone will serve you well throughout your professional career.

When you are choosing a path for your professional life, do not underestimate how interesting and rewarding a career in the insurance industry can be. Whether you are interested in risk management, finance, technology, human resources, marketing or sales, there is a place in this industry for you. The landscape of our industry is always evolving and opportunities are rapidly increasing. In fact, a large portion of employees in the insurance industry will be retiring in the next five years, which will provide even more opportunity for people entering the workforce!

Our work is not only intellectually stimulating – it is also very rewarding! By providing insurance, we are making a promise to our clients that we will be there when they need us. It is our responsibility to help people when things go wrong. This is true for all types of insurance – commercial, personal, life, health – but the workers’ compensation industry will always have a special significance for me because I have spent most of my career working in the workers’ compensation insurance space. We see some of the most catastrophic work injuries imaginable. Our job is to be there for those injured workers on their worst day. Our goal is always to help them receive the best treatment available so that they can attain the highest quality of life possible. Knowing that we play a small part in making someone’s life whole again makes all of our work worthwhile.

In addition to the work we do on a daily basis, many companies in the insurance industry make it a priority to give back to the community.
