Safety National Adds Safe Patient Handling Evaluation Resource to Risk Control Offerings

Safety National announced the release of the Safe Patient Handling Evaluation Resource today – a tool that helps evaluate healthcare facilities’ safe patient handling and mobility (SPHM) programs. Safety National has partnered with Atlas Lift Tech to add this complimentary resource to MAP Client Services, Safety National’s suite of value-added risk control offerings.

The Safe Patient Handling Evaluation Resource will be available to all Safety National policyholders as an online assessment, with an additional in-person assessment available to select markets. The assessment evaluates the following components for effectiveness:

  • Elements included in the existing SPHM program
  • Attitudes towards a culture of safety
  • Ergonomic design principals and equipment inventory
  • Availability and utilization of SPHM technology
  • Training and succession planning
  • Inclusion of a patient-centered SPHM plan of care
  • SPHM’s role in reasonable accommodations and return-to-work practices
  • In-house evaluation for continued improvement

“Caregiver injuries from patient handling activities are a primary workers’ compensation loss source in the healthcare sector and safe patient handling is a large area of focus for our healthcare policyholders,” said David Snodgrass, Assistant Vice President – Risk Control Services at Safety National. “We anticipate that this tool will be a valuable resource to our healthcare clients, helping them to evaluate gaps in their existing programs in order to find opportunities to further alleviate employee injuries and the costs related to them.”

Safety National policyholders can visit the Safe Patient Handling Evaluation Resource web page to watch an informational webinar on the assessment’s features or register to use it.
